Anal Fissures
An anal fissure is a small tear or cut in the skin that lines the anus. Fissures typically cause pain and often bleed. Fissures are quite common but are often confused with other causes of pain and bleeding, such as hemorrhoids. These fissures are treated with topical compounded medications.
Using compounded diltiazem ointment as a treatment option to relax the sphincter muscle and allow the healing process to begin is a great approach. Other options are various strengths of nitroglycerin or nifedipine ointment. Additionally, at California Specialty Pharmacy, we can add lidocaine or bupivacaine, a longer lasting anesthetic, along with aloe vera to provide both pain relief and healing properties to the formula. In addition, this formulation can be made in a silicone base to provide additional healing.
Hemorrhoids
Rectal Ointments – For patients who are suffering from severe hemorrhoids we have the ability to compound several medications, either alone or in combination, into a rectal ointment. Rectal ointments are typically prescribed as a precursor to suppositories, as the ointment will help to shrink the hemorrhoids so that a suppository can be inserted comfortably.
Suppositories – We can compound several combinations of medications in suppository form. The suppositories keep the medications in direct contact with the hemorrhoids providing relief and shrinking the actual hemorrhoids.
Rectal Rocket Suppositories – these unique suppositories gain their name because of their shape which helps to treat internal and external hemorrhoids simultaneously. Because of their contoured shape they do not get lost in the rectum, and they allow patients to expel gas without losing the suppository. The rectal rocket is a patented suppository that is only available to a limited number of compounding pharmacies.
